Show Synopsis
American Idiot is a modern musical that builds a plot around the music of Green Day, primarily from their American Idiot album. This period piece intends to peek into the mindset and culture of the generation that drove this music’s creation. It creates a plot that explores the life paths of three friends, Johnny, Tunny, and Will, as they navigate through challenges in discovering themselves and purpose in their lives. Johnny heads to the city with Tunny to find something that satisfies. He finds a dream-girl girlfriend, Whatsername, but struggles with his drug-induced alter ego, St. Jimmy. Tunny finds no satisfaction, so he enlists in the Army and discovers a new version of himself in the warzone. Will sticks around Jingletown, apathetically living with his girlfriend Heather and their new baby, but doing nothing with his life but smoke pot and drink. Eventually, Heather has enough and leaves him for a new man with the baby. Jonny’s drug habit eventually ruins his relationship with Whatsername and she leaves. So he heads back to Jingletown at the same time Tunny is returning from war with his nurse, Extraordinary Girl, and they meet up with Will. Heather eventually returns to Will and makes a truce handing him the baby. Other friends meet up to see the guys they haven’t seen in a year. One year later, Johnny has cleaned up and started a career, but laments over losing the love of his life. He realizes he has to learn to live inside the rage and love that have defined his life and, with this acceptance, comes the possibility of hope.
